"가끔씩 왜 사느냐는 질문이 떠오릅니다."
석파는 어렵게 말을 꺼냈다.

"살아 있는 존재로서 자연스러운 궁금증이겠지."
길현은 편한 말투로 대답했다.

"어떤 답이 있으십니까?"
"나도 딱히 없다네."
석파는 실망스러운 표정을 지었다.

"하지만 이것 하나는 알고 있다네."
"무엇인지요?"

"살기 위해 하는 것이나 살다 보니 생겨난 것은 사는 이유가 될 수 없다네."

"잘 이해가 되지 않습니다."

"자동차에 연료를 넣거나 소모하기 위해 그것을 사용하지는 않지 않겠는가?"

"그렇지요."

"그렇다네."

길현은 말을 아꼈다.
석파는 한참을 기다렸다.
끝내 길현은 그 눈빛에 못 이겨 한마디를 덧붙였다.

"삶을 유지하기 위해 하는 일은 삶의 이유나 목적이 될 수 없다는 뜻일세.
몸과 마음의 평안, 생명을 잇는 일,
그러한 것들을 원하도록 우리 안에 새겨진 즐거움과 두려움마저도 말일세."

"At times, the question of why I live comes to mind."
James spoke with some effort.

"It is a natural question for one who is alive."
Scott replied, at ease.

"Do you have an answer?"
"Not particularly."
A trace of disappointment crossed James's face.

"But there is one thing I do know."
"What is it?"

"What we do to live, and what arises in living—
neither can be the reason for living."

"I do not quite understand."

"One does not use a car
simply to fuel it or to consume fuel, would one?"

"That is true."

"Just so."

Scott held his tongue.
James waited for a long while.
At last, unable to resist that gaze, Scott added,

"It means that what we do to sustain life cannot be its reason or its purpose.
The ease of body and mind, the continuation of life,
and even the pleasures and fears inscribed within us that make us long for such things—"
